The Domus Aurea is the palace built by Nero after the fire in AD64. In the area now occupied by the Colosseum, there was a lake and all around were gardens. The golden house was not discovered until the Renaissance. Raphael and some of his fellow artists were enthusiastic about the paintings which they found.
