S. Maria in Cosmedin, Rome

The church was built in the 6C and its beautiful belltower, added in the 12C, is one of the most elegant in Rome. The church was restored to its medieval appearence in the 19C. In the porch is the “Bocca della Verità”, according to the legend, the mouth would snap shut on the hand of any one with a guilty conscience. This plaque is possibly from the Temple of Hercules.
