Palazzo Montecitorio, Roma

This building was begun by Bernini in 1650 and completed by Carlo Fontana in 1697. The style of the palace recalls some Bernini’s baroque fantasies and the façade is surmounted by a clock tower. Since 1870 the palace houses the Chamber of Deputies.
The square in which the palace is located is called Montecitorio Square. In the square stands a 6CBC Egyptian obelisk re-erected in 1792 by Pius VI and surmounted by a bronze ball bearing his coat of arms. The obelisk, served as a pointer for a gigantic solar clock marked out on the ground, more or less on the site of the church of S. Lorenzo in Lucina.
